2012 Mississippi Offshore Fishing Tournaments

When it starts to heat up along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, out of storage come the boats and up go the saltwater tournament banners. Besides more than a dozen small CCA tournaments and fishing club events, there are many huge competitions with millions of dollars on the line for professionals and talented amateurs alike. Grab your calendar and look at whats in store for 2012.

The folks over at Gorenflo's Tackle, located at the historic old Point Cadet Marina behind the Isle Casino, start off the tournament season with a bang. Their 26th Annual Cobia Tournament is set this year from May 4-6. Last year's event had a great turn out and some $100,000 in prizes was up for grabs. It should be remembered that the long-standing MS Cobia record, of 106.8-pounds, was brought in back in 1996 at the 10th Annual Gorenflo tourney. The 2012 16th Annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic (MGCBC) Tournament dates are set for June 4-10, 2012. Last year's event was a smash with several large blue marlins including a 700+lb monster, a state record Bigeye tuna, tons of wahoo and more than 31 qualifying dolphin. This year an amazing $1-million in cash and prizes has been put up and anglers from around the entire Gulf are expected to show up to claim their share. The longest running saltwater tourney on the Coast is the annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. This year will be the 64th annual event and is set for June 29-July 4. Billed as the largest family friendly fishing rodeo in the world with more than 50,000 annual spectators. Contestants compete in more than 30 categories and are always a big event. Last year the rodeo did not include large gamefish such as Wahoo, Dolphin and Tarpon, but it remains to be seen if they will be added back this year. The following weekend, stop by the Dock Bar and Grill for the 5th Annual Back Bay Croaker Classic sponsored by coast legend, marine artist Marty Wilson. Last year Marty and the gang put out a $12,000 reward for the largest Croaker to be pulled out of the Bay "dead or alive."
